Our publishing vision

Genres to explore.
Stories to guide us.

A shared identity, many ways into a story. Cabinet Noir welcomes fiction in which setting, plot and an author’s distinctive voice work together.

A key opens an old door in candlelight.
Every story opens a way through.
I

Bringing a period to life

Details, settings and everyday actions that give a story’s world depth. Historical authenticity is part of our commitment to quality.

II

Moving the story forward

A plot that develops, clear transitions and characters facing meaningful choices. The pace should draw readers onwards while giving emotion room to unfold.

III

Championing distinct voices

Each book retains its own character. We aim to bring authors together through a shared commitment to thoughtful writing and compelling storytelling.

Seven genres to explore

Each genre has a colour and a symbol to guide your reading. Explore our visual guidelines and advice for authors →

A story can span several genres. These groupings help readers find their way without confining a book to a single category.

Read our editorial ethics policy

Every book, a voice of its own

We look for well-crafted stories, fully realised characters and language that brings feeling to life. A strong plot depends as much on its development as on the questions it leaves with the reader. The variety of genres enriches this shared ambition.

A visual identity for each collection

Each of our seven genres has its own palette and distinctive mark, shown above. Historical fiction uses shades of black and the ornament ❦; adventure uses shades of orange and the pennant ⚑. Every collection shares a gold accent, headings in upright roman type and restrained introductory text. Covers favour typographic compositions and illustrations rather than photography. These guidelines will shape future designs; covers already approved are retained.

For each publication, a contract appendix will specify the collection, formats, visual principles, schedule and stages for approving the cover and print proof. Rights in texts and images must be clarified separately.
